To Be or Not To Be over a Song

As I was reaching home after a pleasant evening in my Presidency Club, I found myself asking one of my very talented film maker friends, Bhushan, as to what was his favorite song. I quite like to sing while being driven on empty roads and hence this self-indulgent query! Twas a rare opportunity and we both sort of stumbled upon... 'Ye! Kya Bolti tu' from Ghulam. This was most certainly not one of our favorite songs, but the way Bhushan exclaims his 'Yei's is good enough to break into the one song that so established the Aamir-Rani chemistry on screen!

Suddenly, I broke off into my reverie, wherein I told Bhushan that the Ghulam number was like a reply of sorts to 'Abhi Na Jao Chodd Kar' from Hum Dono. He added that in between these two eras was this song from Aaradhana where Rafi croons for Rajesh Khanna - Baahon Mein Bahaar Hai...and Lata goes Na Na Na Na...! (We also spoke of how the most famous song in Aaradhana was the one where Rafi sang for dad Khanna, 'Gunn Gunaa Rahe Hai Bawarein Khil Rahi Hai Kalee Kalee' and that's why Rafi had to come back to sing for son Khanna in 'Bahoon Mein'...! DNA played a vital role in deciding a playback singer boss!!!).

I disagreed with Bhushan on the Aaradhana bit...because

a) the song was not a super hit by any standards, and,

b) the charm that Madhubala lent to 'Abhi Na Jao...' was left unmatched across many years, until Rani gave her presence to the impish, rich girl act in Ghulam.

Now, how many of you agree or disagree with me?
